Julius Adam

Born in Munich on 18th May 1852, Julius Adam was the son of Julius Adam the elder (1826-1874), a painter of landscape figures and a lithograph. He himself was the fourth son of the renowned painter of battle scenes, Albrecht Adam (1786-1862) who recorded Napoleon Bonaparte's victories in a series of canvases and accompanied Napoleon on his disastrous Russian Campaign of 1812.

With such a distinguished lineage, Julius Adam was destined to be an artist of note. Initially he studied with his father in Munich before travelling to America and then Brazil, where he remained in Rio de Janeiro for six years.

On his return to Munich Adam studied at the Academy, one of the finest in Germany, with Michael Echter (1812-79) and Wilhelm van Diez (1839-1907), both prominent professors.

Adam painted primarily genre and animalier works. He developed a reputation as one of the finest painters of cats in Europe, comparable with Henriette Ronner, a contemporary, working in the Netherlands. Adam died in Munich in 1913.
